There are many stories to tell of pioneers and the legacy they have left us. Those you will find in this book have been a labour of love to collect, enjoy, write, edit and record. There remain many more stories and histories that still need to be retold and are worthy of being recorded. I hope others will find the time to discover them, preserve them and have the pleasure of seeing them in print to share and remember - RC.

This work showcases two forgotten stories from Silas T. Rand, Baptist missionary who wanted to translate bibles into the Mi'Kmaq language and learned how to do so by recording the oral traditions of the Mi'Kmaq people, published in 'Legends of the Micmacs'. Peter Sanger uncovered two manuscripts in the Rand holdings of Acadia University, including the story of Little Thunder (dictated to Rand by Susan Barss in 1847) and a manuscript of stories told by someone we only know as old man Stevens. Rand's original book and these manuscripts are some of the earliest examples of indigenous Canadian literature recorded in the original language.
