"Agricola" refers to the pen name of John Young (1773-1837), a Scottish-born scholar and merchant who, through his letters published in the Acadian Recorder (newspaper, Halifax, N.S.), advocated for agricultural improvement in Nova Scotia, leading to the establishment of agricultural societies and a Central Board of Agriculture.
