McDonald, James and others – 1786 – Pictou County

Names listed in the documents: James McDonald, James Fraser, Finlay Cameron, John McDonald, Hugh McDonald, John Forbes, Samuel Cameron, Duncan McDonald

Arrived at New York in 1775 from North Britain. The Rebellion breaking out, they were impressed and taken captive by H.M. Ship of War, the Asia, "until they would voluntarily engage themselves in one body or be distributed into other corps". They remained in the 2nd Battalion of the 84th Regt until the late reduction. By orders of Lieut. Col. Jonathan Small were shown two acres of their ground at Kenticock, where they found they would only destroy their provisions, so relinquished the same. Refused another four acres they were shown as there were no inhabitants near the place, and settled upon a piece of ungranted land near Pictou. Have large and extensive families, and request they be granted the said unoccupied land with such implements and necessaries as have been heretofore issued by H.M. orders. Governor consents. Petitioners may have land at Pictou.
