In 1871, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, Duchess of Saxony and daughter of Queen Victoria, was married to John Douglas Sutherland, Marquess of Lorne and 9th Duke of Argyll. Sutherland was subsequently appointed Governor-General of Canada in 1878; at 33 years of age, he was the youngest appointed to this high Canadian office. Arriving in Halifax in November 1878, he was sworn in at Province House on 25 November, then travelled overland by rail to Ottawa. His progress was recorded in a series of sketches done by H.A. Ogden, then published as lithographs in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, a popular and widely-read news journal of that time.
