This contemporary aerial view of Halifax's central business district shows the impact of high-rise development grafted on to a 250-year-old urban grid. The Citadel, which once dominated the landscape, now appears discreetly tucked in behind the high-rises of the late twentieth century, successors to the old downtown core with its clusters of wharves, sheds and low-rise commercial buildings.
