The Seventeenth Annual Report of the Protestant Orphans' Home (1874) reported that during that year, almost 80 children had passed through the home, 28 had been formally admitted, 33 had been adopted in the town and country, but 40 were still residents. The report raised concern that "The time...has clearly arrived for making some better arrangements to meet the requirements of sickness among the children. At present it is almost impossible to prevent diseases of an infectious and contagious character from spreading rapidly, and the necessity for better means of isolation must be evident to all who consider the character of the Institution...it will be better to obtain another site and erect a new building designed purposely for an 'Orphanage'...."
