The Department of Recreation was established in 1973 to initiate, conduct and encourage programs and activities providing for the orderly development of recreation, sport and cultural activities. In 1979 the department's mandate expanded and its name was changed to Culture, Recreation and Fitness. In 1981 the department assumed responsibility for the Public Archives of Nova Scotia (now Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management). In 1987 the department was dissolved and responsibility for culture transferred to the Department of Tourism, renamed Tourism and Culture (now Communities, Culture and Heritage); for recreation, to the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission; and for fitness, to the Department of Health (now Health and Wellness)
