The Eassons and the Hoyts

Two Hundred Years of Family and Community Life in Nova Scotia

Letter, William Easson, London, to his father, John Easson

Family and business news; William is in London but not faring well; he has had to borrow money from a cousin. His father is in Boston and has been forced to remain there for the winter. William has heard that his father has purchased an expensive silver chocolate pot as a present for his [William's] brother, David Easson, and is upset: "as you are situated at this time Eleven pounds in money would be of more material use to you than a Silver Chocolate Pot in my Brother’s House where there is furniture enough & not much use for such as that…"  18 January 1772.  4 pages : 30 x 36 cm.   Easson-Hoyt Nova Scotia Archives MG 1 vol. 2166 H/25

make presents of to my Brother & Sister & amongst the [rest]
the Silver Chocolate Pot which I do not believe a word of &
if it was so, provided things were more agreeable, I should
be very happy. I assure you I do not Grudge my Brother
any Favors you may bestow on him etc but as you are
situated at this time Eleven pounds in money would be of
more material use to you than a Silver Chocolate Pot
in my Brother’s House where there is furniture enough
& not much use for such as that but if you did buy the
above for my My Brother it was owing to your not weighing
matters rightly and it shows your good intentions to
serve them etc. I hope you will not take anything I have
wrote amiss. The Walnuts could not be got. I shall endeavour
please God I live another year to bespeak some and send over
in due time. I am Dear Father with my Sincerest Prayers
& Best Wishes for your Health & Happiness this and many
New Years with my kind Love to my Dear Brother David
& Compliments to All Friends, Your Dutiful & most
          Affectionate Son William Easson
