The Eassons and the Hoyts

Two Hundred Years of Family and Community Life in Nova Scotia

Letter, William Easson, London, to his father, John Easson

Family and business news; William is in London but not faring well; he has had to borrow money from a cousin. His father is in Boston and has been forced to remain there for the winter. William has heard that his father has purchased an expensive silver chocolate pot as a present for his [William's] brother, David Easson, and is upset: "as you are situated at this time Eleven pounds in money would be of more material use to you than a Silver Chocolate Pot in my Brother’s House where there is furniture enough & not much use for such as that…"  18 January 1772.  4 pages : 30 x 36 cm.   Easson-Hoyt Nova Scotia Archives MG 1 vol. 2166 H/25

it But on the Contrary I must Borrow money to make up
the Balance of My Cousins Account in May & I would
make many Shifts sooner than fall short in that, I have
acquainted Effie who is my sincerest & best Friend with my
Present Circumstances in regard to paying my Cousins Account
& she has insisted on my Accepting of the Loan of the money
to make up the Deficiency of my Account from her, unknown
to any one of the Family, rather than not pay my Cousin
the full Amount as it would not look so well on my side
although I am very certain I should be very welcome to
any small Advance I might [send] him to for a year or
so. The last year has been a very unlucky year to me
I hope this will be better. In the first place my Illness has
cost me altogther with my Apothecary Bill which I only
got a few days ago £4.10. etc, etc about £11
the money laid out for the unfortunate Ticket No.6888
which you was kind enough to give to me & Drawn
a Blank the 16 Day of Drawing ... 13.15.6
& My Aunt writes me the House will take about -9.-.- if
not more to Repair it, so I may reckon myself at £33.15.6 out
