Tracing of a petroglyph of two animals, possibly mantises

view page 1 2

Date: 1888

Petroglyph tracings F: Animals, birds, snakes #8. 3 negatives. Marion Robertson's Rock Drawings of the Micmac Indians interpret this petroglyph as "Possibly a mantis… Drawing perhaps suggested by the action of the female mantis who often during copulation with the male sucks his body dry leaving him an empty husk. A remarkable drawing to find on the rocks of Kejimkoojik, as the mantis is rare in the maritimes, having been collected only once in New Brunswick."
