Colonel John Burbridge, a Member of the House of Assembly, registrar of deeds, judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, and one of the founders of St. John's Church, pledged £100 and an additional £30 if a spire was erected according to his specifications. The frame was raised by men from all areas of Cornwallis Township in 1804. Four years later, the spire was hoisted onto the tower via marine gear borrowed from sailing ships.
