On 26 August, approximately seventy-five Charitable Irish Society members and their guests met at Roods wharf and boarded the steamer Davis Macnab for a hodgepodge on McNabs Island. They amused themselves in various games including baseball, quoits, football and tug of war. The hodgepodge was served about 6:00 o'clock and several toasts, speeches, and songs followed. "Amusements" followed for another hour before the group boarded the steamer for Halifax where they arrived about 9:00 p.m. Felix P. Quinn, Secretary, recorded in the minutes "This outing was declared one of the most successful events held by the society in recent years." Minute book of the Charitable Irish Society, MG 9, vol. 70
