The three societies worked jointly to host the banquet at the Halifax Hotel. The Charitable Irish Society's committee included M.E. Keefe, mayor of Halifax, president; John M. Inglis and W.J. Power, vice-presidents; J.J. O'Brien, secretary; John T. Murphy, financial secretary; and W.A. Lyons. The Halifax Herald, 8 August 1894, p.4, gave a long account of Lord and Countess Aberdeen's visit to Halifax and reported the banquet's success "surprised the most sanguine anticipations of its promoters. Many historic banquets have been given in Halifax to distinguished Britons; but a more brilliant, representative and enthusiastic assembly never gathered in this city than was present last night to do honor to Canada's popular governor general."
