Acadian Cemeteries

Sandstone monument (inscription is illegible) located under a large tree beside the church. Hilaire ArseneuA died in 1870. The oldest monument in the cemetery. Hilaire Arseneu built St Denis Church in 1848. (according to Susan Hill's inventory, inscription reads: Elar [Hilaire] Arsnew, Feb 10, 1870 aged 71 years). He also built the church in Rustico, PEI, in Cap-Pelé et in Beaumont, NB, along with several Protestant churches in the region. He was the son of Louis Arsenault and Marguerite Gautreau, one of the first settlers in Barachois, and came from Grand-Digue (NB). Ronnie-Gilles Leblanc consulted the parish records and says he died 10 Feb and was buried 12 Feb and that he was 70.
