Cape Breton Land Petitions 1787-1843

McLeod, John – 1822 – Cape Breton

Petition to Kempt: Petitioner is a native of Scotland, age 37, is married and has four children. He has resided about two years on a lot at the Gut of Canso for which a warrant was issued some years ago to James Stuart, who built a house and stable and improved about seven acres. He sold his improvements to Donald McPhiel who has never paid him but has removed to Prince Edward Island and sent Hugh Cameron to take possession of the land. Supposing that the land belonged to Cameron, petitioner agreed to pay him 60 for the land, and has since built a house on it. A year ago Cameron died and his widow continued to reside with one Patrick Clansie, an Irish fisherman, in the house built by Stuart. Stuart then threatened to dispossess both petitioner and the widow. Petitioner then agreed with Stuart to purchase the whole lot, for which he asks a grant. Note: approved. Copy of Agreement. Certificate that petitioner has possessed lot 10, Gut of Canso, for two years that he is a good neighbour, and has cleared a good part of the premises. Signed by: Hugh McMillan, Lachlan McPhaden, Donald McMillan, John McMillan, Collin McEachern, No. 6, James Stuart, No. 8, David McPherson, George McKay, William Bannerman, John John Younie and William Cruickshank.
