Two petitions to Nepean. Petitioner, age 44, was, six years before, obliged to give up a government position in Scotland on account of ill health. He came to Pictou. He asks a reserve of 20,000 acres on the north-west branch of the Great Bras d'Or Lake for the settlement of a colony of Protestants, 32 families of which petitioner has already conditionally engaged. Many more will come, as upwards of 700 persons have this fall sailed for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. These people, if they cannot find suitable settlement, will go on to the United States. Petitioner asks that the reservation be made for seven or at least five years, and he will engage to have 100 families settled there. Note: 10,000 acres for two years. Petition 2 asks for a small peninsula south of Cape Portland, called Fourche, which partly forms Forked Harbour. Granted. Two reports from Crawley to Clarke: 600 acres on the west side of the River Inhabitants. Plan: 280 acres on the west side of the River Inhabitants. Plan.
