- dormers absent, undersized or five-sided Scottish,
large central chimney, or end wall chimneys
- centered doorway, rectangular transoms and side lights, symmetrical facade
- detached, semi-detached or terrace houses
- Roman, Greek and gothic details in windows
- not designed by an architect
