Claude Bissell noted in Ernest Buckler Remembered (University of Toronto Press, 1989):
''During the summer we made almost yearly visits to Centrelea ... Ernest would be sitting on a chair underneath the chestnut tree, with a book that he had been reading, carefully cultivating, as he said, an air of nonchalance. As our car drew up and he recognized the visitors, he would rise quickly and walk towards the car to greet us."
