Dear Sir
In reply to your note of the 1, I
beg to say that by reference to my census of the
Micmacs, I find that there are only four
families belonging to Clare; These cultivate no land
but subsist chiefly by begging and fishing.
It is my desire that the grant for the Indians
should be applied as far as possible to settle
them upon the reserves, and as the fishing
season has arrived, I am not of the opinion
that there will be much suffering among
them for food. The sum of [$]15. would
be far beyond the share of the Indians of
Clare, and those belonging to Yarmouth
I am informed have removed to Argyle.
Numerous applications for
money fall into my hands from different
quarters, and I am compelled to
