Les Afro-Néo-Écossais à l'époque de l'esclavage et de l'abolition

John Pleasant, an African Nova Scotian, was the teacher at the African school at Grand Joggins (Acaciaville). He had 42 students. The community and the province cost-shared Pleasant's salary, with the community paying two-thirds. The school itself was, according to William Moorsom (Letters from Nova Scotia, 1830), supported by the Associates of the late Reverend Dr. Bray in England.

The community of Grand Joggins dated back to at least the 1790s. Its African Baptist church was one of the founding members of the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia in 1854.
