649. Benjamin Davis to Gideon White, in England. Family news. "In the event of your meeting a Success equal to your hopes I conceive it might be well worth while you join with some extensive House either in London or Liverpool in a joint Concern to be Transacted in this Country on the Footing of Forsyth or Forman & Grassie - the Government of this Country & most of the great departments being in the hands of American Loyalists there cannot be a doubt that a preference in the line of Supplies would be given to a House established by a person of the same description - & to you particularly who have so good a Claim to their attention." He would be glad to share in such a business. "Affairs in this Country remain much as you left them - the People in the establishment of the prince here seem to have all they wish - Mr. Coffin has come out as Commissioner for the Navy Yard - & you will not be surprized that a revolution should have taken place in that department - he has discovered that large Embezelments had a difft. Times been made of the Kings Stores - & Marshall & his Sons & some others laying under the Imputation has in Consequence been dismissed the Yard - this business now gives Topic for general Conversation - the House of Assembly meet in Feby. at the opening of which I look for much amusement - nearly one half the House are new Members - Hartshorne & Wallis great as their Influence was, are thrown out - Tonge is returnd by a Large Majority..." Holograph.
