1370. J. D. W. White to his brother Cornelius, in receipt of letter negative to the latter's office as seizing officer. …am happy to find you have done something in your preventive office - at this very critical period…It appears that Cunard personally made an application to the L.C. of the Treasury to have Bathurst made a port of Entry as there are many Vessels Loaded Timber there, Among which he had 40 himself last year - They however were unwilling to make the Appointm., but would give his friend (One Eyed Deblois) Shelburne as that was vacant. Cunard then shew them the necessity of the Appointment & they granted it - I mention this as I think Cunard would be the Most likely to secure the office to you, by Letter, on his return - this I think I can easily manage. The House raises tomorrow - After a farcicial session.'' Holograph.
