1166. Nathaniel White to his brother Cornelius. Reminiscences. Comments on United States politics. "our parliament are yet engaged in clearing away the rubbish & have therefore not become interesting. Barry has wisely withdrawn from the bustle of a contested election & given up to the sitting member. You would be confounded at the change since S.G.W.A. {Archibald] took the chair. His visit to our aristocratical parent has filled him with the flourish & humbug of pomp & he now appears to the astonished lookers-on in the robes & full bottomed wig of State. He & Franklin who is similarly attired cut, I assure you, quite a respectable figure. This is all right & has the effect of awing the loquacious members into becoming silence. Those only who have had a peep under the wig have the courage to stand up & address such a majestic figure." Holograph.
