This subject "which tho' not interesting to" them they consider it their duty "as Men and neighbours to state such facts as may tend to wipe off any impression which may have been made on an unprejudiced mind by ill natur'd reports prompted alone by violent party spirit." Mr. Morton's appointment to be deputy collector meets with their complete approval. They conclude: "Your knowledge of the world will point out to you, to what lengths weak and ambitious minds are led by party spirit - to this unhappy cause may be attributed the want of a good Society, and almost every social virtue in Digby - We trust that time and Mr. M's conduct will convince those who are unbiasd that he is, as we believe him to be, undeserving those imputations, and an injur'd man - ".
