Teaching and Learning Resources

Welcome to the Teaching and Learning Resources area of the Nova Scotia Archives website

Archives area a great place to develop and use your skills of investigation. Archives work to preserve materials in their original context. 'Authentic', 'one-of-a-kind', 'original' are all words used to describe archival materials. this makes them reliable and valid sources of information, or evidence of the past.

We have constructed 'Teaching and Learning Resources' as an area of the website where both teachers and learners can explore, and engage with, archival materials using the tools of Transcribe, Translate, Name Drop; and the 'Questions to Consider' that are included throughout the resource.

Transcribe challenges users to test their skills of reading cursive handwriting. This is even more of a challenge with archival documents!

Translate provides language learners with an opportunity to translate archival documents, often originally in English, into the language of your choice - maybe even into the language of the community that they were written about.

Name Drop encourages users of this resource to share their personal or community knowledge to help us enhance the information that we have about the archival photographs found here.

Throughout the resource we have provided some 'questions to consider' while you explore the archival materials. These questions can be printed or downloaded as a 'work sheet' associated with each archival photograph, document, or map. Just click the printer icon for this option.

Some sections of the resource also have 'advanced questions'. These are provided as an opportunity for deeper exploration, and to encourage you to make connections between and among the archival materials found in this resource.
