Letter from Governor Cornwallis about Captain Bloss and his enslaved Blacks
Captain Thomas Bloss RN brought sixteen enslaved Blacks to Halifax in 1750. Governor Cornwallis believed that this half-pay naval officer would be of great service. Clearly slaveholders were seen as holding out good economic prospects for early Halifax.
