Sable Island Sept 11th 1832
Sir
I rec'd (received) your's of the 8th of Sept with all the articles I sent for in good order, (except the pickled fish which I would like to have [word/?] good Herrings) also one barrel of Pork and one barrel of Beef that you sent by her last trip,
With regard to Building a small vessel here I have to beg you will first allow me to give you my views and Secondly to show you what I will actually want and thirdly what I may probably want
First my Idea as Regards the vessel you now have is an [illegible] base on the funds of the Establishment by keeping nearly a Double Crew in her the whole time and from the manner in which they are shipped and leaving the vessel every Trip there must be a great loss in the shape of advances under these circumstances I fear you cannot keep her and I don't like the idea of being left here without a dispatch Boat of some kind, I think that a small vessel of about 20 tons say 28 feet keel 12 feet Beam 5 feet depth of Hold Built flatt Bottomed with Deep and Broad Lee Boards a very round Side with also a very Round deck with her Floor Heads and BUttock Timbers secured with Plank outside and in and batted through firmly would be sufficiently strong to run on Shore any where on the North Beach in the event of a Gale springing up and she should happen to be Caught Whilst the lake is open there is
Darby outlines his opinions on what would be needed in order to build boats (dispatch boats) on Sable Island, and the benefits of doing so. He also writes of supplies sent to the island, horses to be sent to the mainland, and problems in growing hay.
