Sable Island 26th Oct 1854

Dear Sir

I am in receipt of yours of the 13th per Daring. She made her appearance off the North side a week yesterday but the weather has been exceedingly boisterous, and it is only this moment that we have got the cattle landed while our supplies are all on board yet.

I have to inform you that the Sch.r Masconnomet, Martin Master, of and for Marblehead from a fishing voyage on the banks, ran ashore on the North side of this Island at Ten O,Clock on the night of the 23rd instant, crew materials and provisions saved, cargo spoiled, vessel a wreck.

It is not possible for me to send off any horses this trip nor do I think it can be done this fall, for we are very busy, and it is the same amount of labour and difficulty to drive horses so as to catch two, that it would be to catch a vessel load.

I understand that Frank Morash has engaged to return to the Island, but he is of no use here and as I have a very indifferent crew already I want no more of the same sort and besides I have a full crew for the winter.

We are gathering all the cranberries we
can
