Mr. Condon was here Jackson gave notice that he wished to leave in November or sooner and since then I have had some talk with respecting a report he has spread among the people of you not paying him the amount of wages promised and he tries to persuade me to believe that such is the case, and says that he will stay no longer for less than £42 per annum and his family supported free of charge and asks to have Knocks family turned off in the bargain, Consequently I allow him to leave by first opportunity. Jackson is a good man at rough work but he is so regardless of truth in all that he says, and says so much, that he keeps the place constantly in disorder Yet for the sake of his helpless family I would have endured him longer, but he now having asked for more than can be allowed he may as well leave at once. Respecting the quarrel between Jackson and Mr. Knock it would be difficult for me to decide which is most to blame were it not that Jackson has circulated many very scandalous stories about Mr. Knock some of which have been proven false and others doubtful, Possibly many of the stories told by Mr. Knock about Jackson are false too but where a man undertakes to defame a womans character he in my opinion deserves all he may get in return.
In your letter dated 29th August you allude to persons visiting the Island &c. I shall feel sorry if any restriction is made Concerning it before it appears that such is really needed for the Island Establishment and "Daring" both being supported chiefly
