Pand RGI Vol 4261/2 4?
Sable Island 16th May 1853
Dear Sir
The Daring arrived here yesterday and I received the supplies sent in good order, and we are now at the NE bar taking on board herring.
My brother has written to me that Charles Stalken of Clyde River would like to have the Station at the foot of the lake, and as you told me to suit my self in such matters I have written to him that he can have it. Stalken is an old acquaintance. We were boys together and I know his character well and among other good things I know him to be a sober man and strictly honest. He has worked a great deal at ship and mill work and worked with my brother at the Light houses at [Bacton?] and Port Medway. He has been several voyages to the Labradors and was here with Capt Coffin in the ["Bonito"?] last summer, and he is a first rate man with horses. His family consists of wife and two daughters and a young woman who lives with them. His wife is a daughter of James Geddes, Esq of Clyde River and sister of Dr. Geddes of Barrington and is a very respectable women. If you wish to have further evidence of their characters I would beg to refer you to Thomas Coffin Esq MPP for County of Shelburne or to Winthrop Sargent Esq Barrington. Brady the carpenter has been very
insolent
