when I came to the Island the cooking was done by a woman, and now by one of the men numbered, also then the person then in charge of the South Side Station, was skippering the Boat, which the present person although I believe a very competent man for the situation he fills knows so little about a boat that I would not be justified in taking him as one of the crew at any time. I mentioned all I stated to Mr Condon on his visit to the Island, but consider it my duty as Superintendent of a Humane Establishment to mention it also to the Chairman of the Board as I think a good Boats Crew indispensable. The man at present in charge of the Cattle was originally one of the Boatmen and wishes to reassume his old birth [sic]. If I had therefore a good person to take the Cattle my crew would be complete.

I have given permission to George Walker and James Farquhar to visit Halifax, the latter in consequence of ill health. Peter D Young is also obliged to accompany his wife as she has been and still continues very ill. His time will be up in November and I told him some time ago I should ^not require his services after that, and as he is a very troublesome person and not at all suited for the Island it will be scarcely worth while for him to return.

And I would here beg to remark, that when men are sent, they should only be such as
can
