The urgency of the circumstances and the novel and [responsible?] situation in which I am placed must excuse the language of this letter. It is dictated with the highest respect for the prompt and gracious attention Your Excellency has already bestowed upon this business.

I have further to state that since my Letter was transmitted yesterday, I have received a Letter from Mr. Uniacke as the Attorney of the Commissioners threatening me with a private action [fm? from? per?] them ___ So that I now stand in the singular dilemma of being exposed to two actions for doing what I conceived to be a public duty, and forced upon me too from the situation I hold of Agent for Lloyds.

Charges against Captain Darby. Endorsed by Sir Colin Campbell. "The Governor desires that copies of the affidavit taken regarding Sable Island be sent immediately to the Commission that they may inquire into the statements therein contained (---) M. Darby and report to the Governor".
