Halifax 4th July 1836

To His Excellency Major General
Sir Colin Campbell
K.C.B.

I have the honor to transmit for Your Excellency's consideration the Affidavit prepared at Your Excellency's suggestion in proof of the charges communicated by me to the Commissioners of the Isle of Sable. In forwarding them now, I have only to assure Your Excellency that my conduct in this transaction has been governed by a sense of Public duty, and from the high opinion I before entertained of Capt Darby's character I felt regret that such an exposure was compelled upon me. It was the continuance of this feeling that induced me to make the personal application I did this morning ___ for I should prefer both upon Capt. Darby's and my own account that the investigation should be conducted before a tribunal appointed by Your Excellency for the purpose, rather than in a Court of Justice _____ I would willingly escape from the unpleasant duty of defending
