The Hble Petition of James Bergen of
New York
Respectfully Showeth. That as an agent for
persons interested in the American ship Eagle
cargo stranded at Sable Island your
petitioner would respectfully represent - That in
the performance of his duty at said Island and with this
consent and approbation of the master of said ship
Eagle it was deemed expedient to leave four persons
to preserve property in conjunction with the
residents of this Island. That the men so left were
A.H. Crockett an American ship master of respectable
standing, the second mate of the ship, her
carpenter and one hired man who have all
proved themselves to be men of very good character
and quite competent to their duty. That they were
selected from twenty men as being the best and
most liked by the Superintendent of the Island
That since your petitioner left said Island
it has appeared that the men so left have
been successful in saving property & in retaining
this good will of said Superintendent and his
Adherents. That your petitioner gave said
men written instructions in which they were particularly
cautioned to preserve the utmost harmony
on the Island and to conform to the laws
which govern there. That said men were instructed



Requesting as agent of persons intrested in the Ship Eagle wrecked on Sable Island, permission to pay four men there to assist in recovering the cargo.
