His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor has much satisfaction in laying before his Majesty’s Council a copy of the dispatch from the Earl Bathurst enclosing a copy of a letter from one of the Secretaries of the Treasury, stating that his Majesty’s Government have agreed to contribute £400 annually towards the support of the establishment on Sable Island, so long as Nova Scotia shall make a provision of an equal sum for the same purpose.

His Excellency has always held in high admiration the humane feelings which have induced the legislature of this province to maintain for the last twenty four years and its exclusive cost that most excellent but expensive establishment; and when from various causes, it was found to be inadequate to effect the important objects of its formation, His Excellency considered that, as it had proved of such general utility, Nova Scotia ought not to be called upon for an extraordinary grant to supply numerous deficiencies.
