Sir,
We have had the honor to receive your letter of the 22nd inst. enclosing a statement of Robert C. Nicholls complaining of Mistreatment he has received at Sable Island, from the Superintendent and conveying the directions of His Excellency, The Lieut. Governor to us, to enquire into the circumstances of his complaint and to report the same to His Excellency.
In reply, we beg to inform you that the commands of His Excellency, The Lieutenant Governor, shall have our immediate attention. We have, however, to state, that, at this present time, the enquiry must necessarily be conducted on the ex-parte statements of the complainant alone, unsupported by any proof, and that it will be necessary for us to wait until an opportunity occurs to communicate with Mr. Darby, the Superintendent, in order to receive his explanations, relative to the charges preferred against him.
In the meantime, we have the honor further to state that Robert C. Nicholls has been discharged by the Superintendent for improper conduct, and
To the Honble
Sir Rupert D George Bart.
