their claims thereto. The Comm.rs have written to me respecting the "Blonde" and say "the Ship and Cargo are the property of S. Cunard until the month of June next" which is by far too long a time for purchasers to hold their claims here and if she had been sold under a limitation of 3 or 4 months for removing, the establishment might have got her and cargo for £50 or less. It may be said the underwriters will benefit by the course taken but I dont believe there is a respectable Insurance company in the world but would willingly lose a few pounds that Sable Island might become what it never yet has been. With all the boast there has been of the many buildings &c put up here there is not a comfortable dwelling on the Island nor a building in which we can keep our supplies free from damage. In a short time we will require 200 lbs Shingles and 50 lbs lumber to put the the buildings in order, in fact some of them should be immediately torn down and others of a different description put up. we are at work at the house my family occupied last winter and will soon have it in good order. If we had got the "Blonde" + Cargo we could have made as many shingles and as much lumber as would have served the place for 20 years, and if a thousand ships were to be wrecked here there never could one come in a better place for us nor with a more suitable cargo. and I cannot think they were bought so much with a view of making money out of them as of depriving us of the benefit of them and of increasing the parties claims around the Island.
