I did intend calling upon you at your office yesterday respecting the money advanced by me to the crew of the Bella Maria, but as the arrival of the Steamer and closing of the mail for England so much occupied your attention [attention crossed out and replaced with time] I did not wish to call off your attention to minor subjects.
Mr Wallace sent me an official letter with a copy of your communication to him containing His Excellency's view of the case of the unfortunate sailors. I think with a little information you will see the matter in a different light.
When the arbitrators made up their award, an extra sum was given for the express purpose of relieving these men, and that sum was I think about £75 - more the whole expense was only £99,,14,,3, so that Government would only advance the difference, it being well understood that a larger balance was awarded in consequence of the situation of the men - after the conversation I had with you I did not hesitate to provide
