As a preceding report has circulated in the City of Halifax prejudicial to the character and behaviour of Governor Darby of Sable Island -- it behoves me as Mate of the late Am.. Schn'r Fulton which conveyed the passengers from whom the report originated to contradict the same to the best of my knowledge and observation while on Sable Island.

In the first instant, if it had not been for the prompt and energetic assistance of Governor Darby on the morning after our being in the Breakers every Soul or rather more moderately expressing - a number of our people would inevitably have perished, for dawn of day had scarcely set in, before he rendered assistance with five of his people and a Boat from our vessel could not have lived in the sea then running.

I have seen the depositions of some of the Passengers belonging to the late Am. Sch'r Fulton [American Schooner Fulton] and think it my duty between man and man not to allow such statements made prejudicial to the character of any individual, particularly when without a shadow of foundation, without contradicting what in my own observance I consider at variance with the truth

As regards the charges -- William Heron states that he could not obtain milk by purchasing it, also other necessities - answer to this, Governor Darby informed us collectively or rather circulated among us, that we could have Milk gratis - and everyone that chose to apply for it obtained it - the Governor told William Heron that he could take no Boarders - but Mrs Daerby at his own solicitation cooked his allowance for five shillings a week, which was an office she considered independent of her duties - as it was extra trouble and he preferred taking his allowance at the Governor's House instead of the
