Sable Island June 14th 1849 92

I recd. you letter dated the 7th - and markd the contents, as Capt. Lockwood made no stay here I had no time to write = but I send by Capt. Darby the true state of the Island, the provision you have sent will not be sufficient to serve us for a twelve month, as our old stock was nearly Expended when Capt. Darby arrived - our small stores was intirely out only the small loaf of sugar [cane?] sent by Capt. Lockwood, you have sent only one & half barrells Mackerell, - which wont last our people above a Month = and only a tierce of Beef and one barrell pork = which to go to that three times a day will be soon gone = the spring has been very backward we have but just done planting = our Cattle are very Low = we have had six calves and four of them died the stock is intirely worn out, if you think proper that we should kill the old stock when they are orders we will do it, and you send some fresh stock on, which will answer the same purpose to government as it will save them buying any meat kind for the Island = if you could send on by Capt Darby in the fall one good bull and six cows - I think it would make a great alteration in the stock = and as for hogs we have got between 30 or forty hogs = that if we had any thing to fatten them - we should have plenty pork, for our own use ___ turn over
