Gates and Hunt are trying to profit from the sale of rum, but Ross is to exercise his authority as a Magistrate in order to prevent it being sold without a license; comments on subject of commissions (possibly militia); remembers Mr. Calkin as a sharp little fellow at Liverpool, but warns Ross not to let Calkin run him; does not recommend Calkin as a Captain but promises to consult Morris re: meadow.
