6242 — ''Perdix perdix(L.) = P. cinerea “Hungarian Partridge.''''

Notes from Piers Accession Book:

Scientific Name:  Perdix perdix(L.) = P. cinerea “Hungarian Partridge.”  Adult female.  Im. Male  Also one Egg which was taken from this specimen when it was being mounted. 

Locality and When Collected:  Found killed by being flown against a telegraph wire, one mile southwest of Shubenacadie, Hants Co., NS; 25 May 1928.

Collector (c) Donor (d):   Lt. Col. Rbt B. Willis (d) Halifax.

Remarks:  No spur on leg.  Tail of 18 feathers. 

No dark “horseshoe” on breast’ 
L. 12.90; W 5.80; T 3.40; Tar 1.50; B .57; B from N .51.  Weight 17 oz (1 lb, 1 oz).

Egg.  Colour buffy – white or pale buff apparently without any distinct markings.  Size: 1.41 x 1.03 in.  Egg received 24 Aug./28.

It cannot be said that this is the progeny of this species imported from Northern Bohemia, Europe and released near Elderbank in Musquodoboit Valley, Hfx Co., in the Spring of 8 April 1926 (see Acc No 5786), which may have found its way across to Shubenacadie, or one of those released in Shubenacadie this Spring 1928. 

The taxidermist, L. A. Purcell, reports that the crop of this bird, when opened, contained small leaves, “like violet leaves”.  This specimen also contained one egg, which has been preserved.
