5148 — ''Photographic print of obverse and reverse of Silver medal of George III''

Notes from Piers Accession Book:

Scientific Name: / Common Name:  Photographic print of obverse and reverse of Silver medal of George III, said to be of 1765, belonging to whoever is the Second Captain for the time being of that part of Micmac Tribe of Indians whose headquarters are near Shubenacadie, Hants Co., N.S. (Known as "the lion and wolf Indian medal").  See full particulars under Acc. No. 5147.

Collector (c) Donor (d):  Cast made by Henry Birks & Sons, Ltd., Halifax, from a mould made by them from the original model, which I lent them for the purpose in Sept. 1922.

Received:  1922 Nov. 24

Quantity:  2

Remarks:  Entered here, in order to keep it close to the plaster moulds, and the photographs of the same medal.

In this metal case, the obverse is fairly good as regards the King's head; by the inscription has been roughly worked over and so lost all the original sharpness.

The reverse, although correct in general outlines, has been spoilt as an exact reproduction of the original, by having the outlines of the church, buildings, etc., accentuated by being gone over and strengthened in a manner which dies not agree with the relief in the original.  The plaster moulds,  Acc. No. 5147, will therefore represent the exact appearance of the original, while this metal cast will generally carry a good idea of the appearance of the medal in metal.

Date Accessioned: 22 September 1922
