Men in the Mines

A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

"One of the Busiest Mines in Province"

"The Greenwood coal mine, four miles from New Glasgow, is one of the most active collieries in Nova Scotia. Note the contrasts in transportation, motor truck, horse and wagon and dogsled. The company has permitted unemployed and needy who come to the mine with handsleds or dogsleds to carry away coal and each day a number of men are allowed to pick over the piles and bag coal which is taken to town for their own use." Published in The Evening News, probably 19 January 1935 — the depths of the Great Depression in Nova Scotia, when mining communities were especially hard-hit by the economic decline.
