"Vaccinations", 1955

The physician wielding the needle is Dr. Allan R. Morton, City Commissioner of Health and Welfare. He may be administering the new Salk polio vaccine, or booster shots to protect against smallpox or diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus. It is also possible that he is administering the new intradermal tuberculin test, which he introduced to city schools in 1955 to replace the former patch test. None of the recipients look happy about these advances in modern preventive medicine.
