Tom Connors: 'The Old Sport'

James Hamill versus Walter Brown Hudson River at Newburgh, N.Y.

For the championship of America and a $4000 purse, James Hammill (right) and Walter Brown sculled a five-mile race on the Hudson River at Newburgh, N.Y., Sept. 9, 1867. To see the race, sportsmen, gamblers, and socialites sailed up from New York in schooners and side-wheelers, booed lustily as Hammill was disqualified.
