William Leggo, The History of the Administration of The Right Honorable Frederick Temple, Earl of Dufferin, late Governor General of Canada (Montreal, 1878), p. 18, summarizes Dufferin's interest in Ireland — "He early began to study the questions of land tenure, of the relation of landlord and tenant, and of Irish emigration; and, by his speeches in the House of Lords, his letters to The Times, his pamphlets, and his addresses at public meetings, he soon acquired a high reputation as an authority on these complex and harassing questions."
