By 4 September 1834 The Novascotian, (Volume VII, Number XXXVI, page 3 [283], column 1) was able to report under the heading “The West Indies” news that had arrived from St. Kitts of the reception of Emancipation there on August 4 where formerly enslaved workers refused to adopt the Apprenticeship system. Martial Law was declared in St. Kitts and 600 British Marines landed to restore order. The local news in Halifax was dominated by a Cholera epidemic.
