Spoils of War: Privateering in Nova Scotia

Convoy system protects merchant trade

A key feature of the war at sea was Britain’s use of a convoy system, which allowed fleets of merchant vessels to cross the open sea under the protection of Royal Navy frigates. Though slow, the system reduced losses to enemy privateers.
