The Petition of Charles Adams
Respectfully sheweth
That your petitioner has been in charge of the Eastern Station at Sable Island for a period of nearly four years during which time the nature of his duties has subjected him to much hardship and exposure. That some time since viz. in January 1845 he signed an agreement to remain two years upon the Island which time will not expire until next January. That since that time he has remained in the discharge of his duty until absent about four months ago when he became so ill in consequence of great exposure the severe labour that he was compelled to come to Halifax for medical assistance. That a short time since he returned to the Island for the purpose of resuming his duties but found that the state of his health was such as not to enable him to do so. That perceiving he would not be able to fulfill his agreement Your Petitioner applied to the Commissioners of the Island to allow him to leave it, to annul his agreement and pay him for his services up to the period of his application which they refused to do and stated that he was not entitled to receive anything for the last four months as he had been absent from the establishment during that period. That Your Petitioner during all this period was suffering from illness and completely incompetent to discharge his duties. That he is a poor man and rendered unable from the present state of his health to do hard work. That he has only requested the payment of his wages since
